You are starting a new job...

Have you ever felt that suddenly you are starting from scratch again?

Everything you knew, your expertise, your know-how is challenged. What seemed simple in a different context is now difficult. You feel that you don't learn so quickly and doubt starts to creep in.

Have I made the right decision? Am I as good as I thought I was? What if I made the wrong decision? Why is it so difficult?

All of this is fairly normal. Especially if you have been a long time in your precedent role / company. It's called the learning curve, and it can be steep!

3 things to help you out:

1️⃣ Don't panic! leave yourself some time to learn. Nobody is expecting you to make a difference and know everything in your first week. The more senior the role, the more you need time to understand what's happening. Go and ask questions to figure out how things are working in this new place.

2️⃣ Get back to your fundamentals: what you are really good at. What got you recognition and praise in your precedent role/organization. See how you can apply it in the new organization. They hired you because they need you, show them what you can bring. Test 1 or 2 ideas a week to see how it lands. Be proactive.

3️⃣ Get help. There is a lot to unpack in a new role, you need a sounding board, someone to brainstorm with, whether it's a friend, a former colleague, a family member or a coach. Someone who can help you make sense of what's happening and guide you through the transition.

It's also a good time to keep track of things you discover, once you are settled in the new role, you will have lost your "fresh perspective", you will be part of "how we do things here".

And you, what helped you when you changed jobs?
