Picture it for a second.
Probably not like a straight or ascending line, but more likely a sinusoidal line, with high and lows.
I remember when I started my career in HR, we were talking about the "career ladder". It was and still is a pretty popular concept, deeply engrained in professional minds. But soooo far from reality, inherited from the past century.
The reality is that everyone's career is made of:
โ๏ธ progresses (that big jump you were -not?- expecting),ย
โ๏ธ stagnation moments (that job you have been doing for too long) andย
โ๏ธ low points (that redundancy or mismatch that happened).
But what if we reframe it differently?
โ๏ธ Your progresses are where you are stretched to learn new things super fast, you get more exposure, you "change" category in a way. You get under pressure and excitement.
โ๏ธ Stagnation are moments of consolidation and sometimes expansion: you crystallize your skills, you explore in a comfortable setting. You have time to honour different parts of your life or focus on yourself. You rest in a way.ย
โ๏ธ Low points are reframing moments where you question yourself, relook at your priorities, build your resilience. You get challenged to reinvent yourself and emerge stronger.
All these moments are truly essentials to your growth. They nurture you but they can be destabilizing. They also happen at an accelerated pace, especially in periods of business transformation or uncertainty, as we know now.
So, if you were to draw your career again, what would you change? The line or how you interpret it? And how do you prepare for the next stage?
